Almost as long as scammers have existed, there have been people who’ve dedicated themselves to tripping them up, so much so that “scambaiting” content has become its own genre. Creators like Kitboga have amassed huge audiences based on their work baiting scammers, hoping to waste their time and resources so they’re less able to scam unsuspecting victims, with some also collecting their information to pass on to the authorities.

YouTuber Pierogi, who has an account called Scammer Payback, has been making videos since 2019. A cybersecurity specialist, he uses modulators to alter his voice while speaking to scammers and keeping them busy; while he’s got them on the phone, he hacks the scammers’ own devices, deleting their files and gathering information about their activity and location.

In one of his most recent videos, as the scammers think they’re resetting his computer, Pierogi, with the help of a fellow baiter, Nano, is able to track the scammer’s precise location in Kolkata. He proceeds to call them repeatedly (since they keep hanging up) and taunt them with this information. The scammers try to insist that Pierogi is the scammer, not them — the old “I know you are but what am I” playground response — before switching tactics and claiming that the Kolkata location he’s pinpointed is their old address.

Along with Nano, Pierogi is then able to listen in on the scammer’s conversations without their knowledge by hacking into their computer. As a result, he’s able to hear the scammers freaking out about his uncovering their location, with one scammer trying to calm the other down by reminding him they’re only renting the apartment that Piergo tracked them to and that the satellite footage Pierogi can see isn’t live.

Attempting to call them one last time, Pierogi discovers that their phone number has been disconnected, concluding, “They are done. They are on the run.”

But a spreadsheet shown at the end of the video reminds us that this is far from over — there are countless other scam calling centers that Pierogi and his team have compiled data on, providing plenty of more opportunities to beat them at their own game.
